HUD Approves Harris County's
Hurricane Beryl Recovery Plan
Overview
In 2024, Harris County experienced two major disasters that underscored the urgent need for long-term recovery and resilience planning. On May 16, the Houston Derecho brought destructive winds and widespread power outages, followed by Hurricane Beryl’s landfall on July 8, which caused severe flooding across the region. In response to these back-to-back emergencies, Harris County developed a comprehensive recovery strategy to rebuild stronger and more equitably.
The federal DR funds in response to Beryl & Derecho Action Plan has now been formally approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), unlocking critical federal funding to support housing, infrastructure, and mitigation efforts for years to come.
